For the first time in 15 years, the Central Valley Falcons varsity girls basketball team has won a section title. Central Valley High School student Tyler Carson hadn't seen his dad, USMC Staff Sgt. Robert Carson, in about a year during which time he had served a 7-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. With a lot of planning by Tyler's mom, Nicole Sarlin of Shasta Lake, and his stepmother Lori Carson of North Carolina, a surprise visit was planned to reunite Tyler and his dad on Thursday at Central Valley High School.

The two Shasta County sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics team members who shot and killed gunman Gregorio Estrada have been identified and are shown in video above. Det. Troy Clegg, left, and deputy Jason Gassaway make their way across Main Street, heading toward the south side of US Bank. The two fired a total of seven shots with one of those bullets killing Estrada. Since both men were firing the same type of weapon it isn't known which one fired the fatal shot, said Lt. Scott Mayberry of the Redding Police Department. RPD is the law enforcement agency conducting the officer shooting investigation. Gassaway regularly works in the City of Shasta Lake and was a deputy in eastern Shasta County from 2002-05.

Two law enforcements officers reportedly shot and wounded a suspect in the attempted armed robbery of US Bank in Burney Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 15, 2009. The suspect was taken to a Redding hospital while a second man was being questioned by investigators. Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said the suspect is “seriously injured.” He would not identify the suspect, his wounds or medical condition. Shasta will take on Amador in the finals of the varsity boys bracket and the host Central Valley Falcons will face Hamilton in the finals of the varsity girls bracket at Saturday's Lehigh Classic Basketball Tournament. The Wolves defeated Ponderosa in overtime 43-42 for just the second loss the Bruins have suffered at the tournament since 2002. Amador defeated the host Falcons in the other semifinal varsity boys game 43-34. Central Valley's varsity girls team beat Willows 48-33 while Hamilton defeated Hayfork 44-29. The Burney alumni was defeated 48-0 by the Central Valley alumni in a football match-up at Enterprise High Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009. The game was dubbed The Willie Lyons Bowl in memory of deceased 2008 Burney graduate Willie Lyons Jr. The players of the Burney squad signed and framed a jersey and presented it to Willie Lyons Sr. at halftime. The Falcons defeated the host Miners 27-6 but saw potential NAL MVP Colton Silveria suffer a broken tibia in his left leg during the game. He's likely out for at least the next three games. SHASTA LAKE – It was an emotional night here Sept. 4 as Central Valley High School paid tribute to U.S. Army Spc. Tyler Vietti, the three sport athlete and 2006 CVHS grad who died Aug. 31 in Afghanistan. “The emotion was extremely high,” Central Valley’s varsity head coach Matt Hunsaker said of Friday’s pre-game ceremony. “It was a great tribute to a fallen soldier.” That high emotional level transferred to the playing field as the Falcons scored five touchdowns in the first quarter on way to defeating the Trinity Wolves 55-12 in their opening game of the season. U.S. Army Spc. Tyler Vietti, a three-sport athlete who graduated from Central Valley High School in 2006, was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 31, 2009. Tyler was a member of the 2005 Central Valley Falcons football team that went undefeated with a 12-0 record and won the section championship - the first in the school's 50 year history. At the JV and varsity football games on Sept. 4 between Central Valley and Trinity, video and photographic highlights of Tyler during that football season were shown, interspersed with other photos from his final year at CVHS. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell visited Central Valley High School on April 8 following the announcement a week earlier that CVHS was one of 261 California middle and high schools that were named a 2009 California Distinguished School. The annual award recognizes some of the state's most exemplary public schools. It’s the second time this decade CVHS has been so honored. “It’s a great award for our teachers, our students and the community,” Central Valley High School Principal Emmett Koerperich said. Top-seeded Corning beat No. 2 Central Valley, 56-45, to claim the Northern Section Division IV girls title at Chico State's Acker Gymnasium on Friday, March 6. CV sophomore forward Lala Forrest-Cawker scored 31 points and snared 13 rebounds. Sophomore center Bre Mackie finished with six points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks. The Galileo Lions will try and stop the Ponderosa Bruins from winning their sixth Lehigh Classic title in seven years when the two teams face off at 6 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. Galileo, the San Francisco school making their first appearance at the Lehigh tournament, defeated Alameda on Friday 55-39, while Ponderosa held off a late rally by Shasta to defeat the Wolves 45-39. Lehigh host Central Valley will play West Valley for the consolation trophy at 1:30 p.m. after the Falcons defeated Liberty Christian 61-53 and the Eagles edged Amador 49-44. Amador and Liberty Christian will kick things off on Saturday at noon in the seventh place game. Shasta and Alameda battle for third place at 3 p.m. And it will be Shasta against Foothill in the JV championship at 4:30 p.m. For highlights of Friday’s action, click on the photo. Central Valley lost a thriller to Alameda 67-65, while defending champion Ponderosa shut down West Valley in the day’s first game 41-15. Bruins beat CV for 5th Lehigh title in 6 years
For the fifth time in six years, the Ponderosa Bruins won the championship of the Lehigh Classic. The Bruins, who lost to Central Valley in 2006, defeated the Falcons 56-47 at the 14th annual tournament at Central Valley High School. The Bruins JV team kept their streak alive winning their fifth title in a row with a 32-30 victory over Shasta in the championship game.
